Synopsis:

In western Tokyo lies a vast Academy City of 2.3 million people, about 80 percent students. Special curricula develop psychic powers, ranked from Level 0 to Level 5. Its extraordinary technology promises safe lives, but hidden beneath the peace are “dark side” groups that take on dirty work. ITEM is an elite four-girl unit: Kinuhata Saiai manipulates nitrogen for defense; Frenda Seivelun uses explosives and traps; Rikō Takitsubo tracks the faint energy of espers; and Shizuri Mugino is one of only seven Level 5s. Then a “fifth” girl appears, drawing ITEM into a new darkness. A story of these unusual girls’ lives, bonds, violence, and shadows.
